Guys, this is from our facebook group Aquaponic Malaya, started on 3rd January 2014. I thought it would be worthwhile to transfer our thoughts here.
Just something i thought to share, watching our senior Aquaponics members doing Dutch bucket, going Hydroponics route with chemical fertilizers. Guys, from my current research, commercial farmers locally and globally moving towards natural farming. The age old believe that chemical fertilizer and pesticide is the fastest easiest, and viable is slowly changing, or fading. Check out Natural Farming, or Korean Natural Farming. Its a method of using microbes to fertilize soil, and widely used as Foliar sprays . How u create the microbes? You can DIY, with easy to get day to day item like gula hitam, pisang , kangkung and stuff( the terms will be IMO2, FFJ, OHN and etc) . Its a concept of "multiplying" this microbes to accelerate Yield MORE than the chemical route, at the same time giving natural protection from pest. Yes, Low natural input, higher YIELDS. It makes more sense for a home Gardener to grow natural/ organic produce from mainly household waste and materials rather than going the chemical fertilizer methods right? Best part, if you think its a hassle to produce this Natural microbes, its readily available on the shelf now, produced and packaged by local farmers. Now, You may ask Natural Farming works on soil, how does it applicable to Hydroponics / Aquaponics systems ? With proper recipe, it might work magic. Lets ponder, if this interest anyone lets dig deeper.

Ranua Keightley:- IM IN BRO
Mohammad Azral Abu Bakar:- Have been practicing making my own IMO, FFJ, OHN and use it as foliar. However, usage of IMO quite limited in aquaponics if the GB using perlite or leca as microbes would not be able to breakdown the nutrient.
Affnan's Aquaponics I made those before, very easy, I recommend using those 20 liter drinking water bottles. Come to think of it, I should make some more.
Wingz Park Yuu Tuh AP system still need baja input?
Mohammad Azral Abu Bakar AP system still missing some Trace Element and P & K, hence you can see your leaf looks like lack of nutrient.. Especially if you plant fruit type of vegetables
Shashi Kumar @mohammad Azral Abu Bakar Bro, in a different perspective, the Natural Method usage can be extensive. Lets discuss Foliar spray, on AP or hydroponic setup.Plants go through stages , the Growing Stage :-It is when
plants consume Carbohydrates (C) and convert them to
Nitrogen (N), then the Morning Sickness stage in which they
need “Sour Nutrients” which come in the form of
Phosphoric (P) compounds. Then, flower stage, and if applicable the fruiting stage needs Potassium (K). Foliar application differs at different stage according to the NPK trace elements. There is 5 types of recommended OHN:- Garlic, Ginger, Kayu Manis ,Tungkui & kimchui. then FFJ / FPJ Fermented fruit / plant juice, FAA fish amino acid, PCA-tulang, IMO 2, BRV brown rice vinegar, LAB lactic acid bacteria . So about total 12 types of mixtures. Hence, the results surely will be significant, in term of foliar nutrient intake, and natural pest control.
Moving on to the FT/ GB, I believe these natural mixture also can be mixed with the FT water at correct ratio. See, for the nitrogen cycle, we only know nitrosomonas, n nitrobacter. This is because this type bacteria is easily captured, n multiplied in a lab environment. Makes it easy to sell in aquarium shops. In actual, there is hundreds of thousands type of microbes that's working in our GB. Hence the long time for AP to reach maturity to get the bacteria colony. The theory is if you can keep introducing this microbes, with the correct stages, results should be substantial as we are suplying microbes+fish friendly NPK elements.
LAB contains lacto bacilli bacteria family strains which is known for ammonia control, and used as probiotic that improves fish digestion. It is widely used in aquaculture, spray/ soak on fish feed, air dry it n then feeding them. Direct mixture in FT improves water quality n fish immune system.
Sorry guys, might be to much info to digest, but in actual it's pretty simple n easy to practice .
On the perlite/leca/gravel gb, in my opinion IMO will still work like a charm, as how worms thrive in gravel/leca GB. IMO will colonize the GB, and break every available organic matter. Theoretically, plants releases chelating agents, in order requesting the type of nutrients they need at particular time. This agent attracts particular microbes, that in-turn churn 'available organic matter' to a state where plant can absorb. This is nature's clockwork.

Mohammad Azral Abu Bakar True, but not that effective as perlite & leca could not be broken down.. I have used coco Fiber as my GB and you can actually see the EM breaking down the fiber into soil quickly. The FPJ/ FAA + OHN + small dosage of saltwater should be able to provide additional nutrient via foliar spray.
Shashi Kumar Yup true bro,it's the matter of available organic matter. It works wonder on the soil as it said can break sand particles. And end of the day, the result should be measured by yield with IMO and without.
Or versus chemical fertilizer . On soil it's proven IMO won, in water still remains untested. That's the whole point actually, growing healthy organic food!

Mazlan Bin Bostam
My practice on my AP
1) weekly on seaweed fertilizer.
2) Adding earthworm on my GB.
3) Once a month a spoon of DTPA Iron
4) Egg shell buried on the GB.
5) Just put little bit Zeolite on my GB
6) Once a week spray leave with the mixture of halia, garlic, cili padi & molasses.
Fuhhh...too organic ke???

Richard Rashid Chuan Just for discussion here. Think the reason for some of our recent decision to go Hydroponic is basically based on the following:
a. most of us finds AP veg quite slow in growth as compared to those in Hydro.
b. have tried most of the AP systems and wish to experiment
c. it's the evil of greed making us want better results then what we are getting

Affnan's Aquaponics A lot of misconception about aquaponics, 1. It is not to compete or replace Hydroponics or other means of plant growing.
Aquaponics is the practice for fish and plants and trying to get a balance that is right for individuals needs, plant growth will be different and it's best to do selective planting to get good result.
Rather than trying to "outdo" other planting method, Aquaponics is to ensure sustainability by going the Natural way of planting, Artificial means like hydroponics or even fertigation do well in the sense it use concentrated fertilizer to ensure good growth, Aquaponics practice we are constantly searching for that balance between plants and fish.
Aquaponics is more challenging that the rest, because we need to learn fish keeping as well as planting. It is advisable to look what we are trying to achieve and revise our planting style, hence some of us here trying out other style that may suit our needs better.

Richard Rashid Chuan Well said Affnan. To add on to this, most of us are enthusiasts or weekend gardeners who wish to provide veg free of herbicide and pesticides for the family so yield is a priority. For us to go deep into the topics of the necessary minerals and other sciences is a little too demanding for us....unless we are doing it on a commercial basis.
Mohammad Azral Abu Bakar know something goes into your plant will help long way.. It's like knowing how your car works.. Instead of driving it and dunno why the engine overheat..
Richard Rashid Chuan Oh I do agree with you Mohammad Azral Abu Bakar but sometimes you have to consider certain factors in learning all that you just said. It's a whole new learning process all over again and in this hurried world, its not an option we can savour.
We are however appreciative for any selfless information from anyone in this group that wishes to share their knowledge!
Looking at the register, we have 261 registered members here but only a small handful post on this forum. Even at that, the postings are of our "progress" and "guesswork" on how to improve on the AP's of our choice.
Never has there been once where there is a contribution on the types of nutrients, etc other then what we have read from Afnnan's Aquaponics!
In strengthening this group, we should have more clinics not only to disseminate knowledge but also to encourage camaraderie among the members. Look how well the Solar Power workshop got off! Once again many thanks to the unselfishness of Steven Wee and Wingz Park Yuu Tuh
Members like Shashi Kumar and Mohammad Azral Abu Bakar who has the knowledge could provide us with the necessary know-how to move on with our AP.

Affnan's Aquaponics Fb not a suitable platform to post serious topics, it is more of a "hit and run" kinda post because it will be diluted with more post of a short term nature,
Forum is a better place for serious and easily search for topics that can be made as references, this is the main reason no serious discussion on fb groups aparts from "look my carrot is growing" kind of post.

Mohammad Azral Abu Bakar Aiyoo Richard Rashid Chuan not much knowledge la, just thrown in few pisang with gula merah then kautim.. Your AP set is more technical, pening wooh, most sifu AP here looks like refinery plant to me already.. But what Affnan's Aquaponics said is true, not much discussion on the nutrient issue ie no picture of leafy issue / it makes me wonder am i the only one have problem with nutrients?
Shashi Kumar Sorry bro's was tied up yesterday. And boy, so much of comment! Feels good to see this discussion, and happy i got you guy's attention.

Let me start with Mazlan Bin Bostam, bro, Guess your doing great with the organic regime, Rock on! Just a note, stuff like seaweed extract, chelated irons are surely expensive. Hence the idea to incorporate Natural Farming methods.. cheap and DIY stuff.

Richard Rashid Chuan, Glad to have your comment bro, truly understand and respect your predicament to go chemical fertilizer way on the dutch bucket. But my heart and spirit is attached to organically produced natural food.. hehe. Hence posted this to share my findings and thought at the moment, but what will be the best is sharing my experience 6 month down the road, as i'm fully geared towards the IMO methods. Bro, actually if you skip the science & technicality, Natural Farming/IMO is pretty easy and straight forward stuff. Very practical to a home grower. Since this post to loooong, i'm gonna post another fresh one for you... to be continued!
And yes, another workshop is to totally necessary.. i second and third that!

Affnan's Aquaponics Totally agree on your take on Aquaponics. Hence, i'm experimenting thoughts on IMO as a booster, and protection. And mainly, as bro Richard Rashid Chuan said, once you start producing vege's, you want more, and you want it fast. Hence the idea/trend in Aquaponic Malaya members going the route of dutch bucket installation to turbo charge production. Its cheap, its faster then another GB/NFT setup, and its a new variant to a hobby system. And, most importantly just buy AB fertilizer and kow tim! My thoughts on this, is it possible to beat the AB fertilizer with Natural Methods.
Affnan's Aquaponics And yes, we need to move to forum... this valuable discussion will fade away soon! So, as a tribute, i'm going to copy and paste this under general discussions in the forum. Lets continue with our commenting galore there.
